acrylic painting, "Birthday Cyclamen, and Let's"

Greetings,

Today I sent a painting out into the world.  'Birthday Cyclamen', with it's signature just barely dry, is now hanging in the front window at Arts On Grand.  Yes, it looks lovely, thank you!  As it passed through the 'phases of the easel' it had a partner in that I was working on both of them alternately.  'Let's' is the street scene of the same vintage.  'Let's' is 40 x 40 inches, and apparently more than my little HP camera can handle.  I have tried outdoor light, indoor light, and flash and no flash, with a tripod under it every time, and I am still not satisfied with the image I have.  When I have  a pro do my images for me, I normally wait until I have several paintings ready to photo, such is not the case at the moment, so suffer along with what I can do on my own.  When I have a couple more canvases ready, I will head them all down to Foto Pro and get them done right!

     'Birthday Cyclamen',  30 x 24 inches, $450

     'Let's",  40 x 40 inches, $725

It's late, gotta go.

acrylic painting, street scene gets a name?

Greetings!

Could this be the painting, slowest ever, to finally get off my easel?  And we've no guarantee that it's done yet!  I have developed a great deal of empathy for artists who work a couple of day jobs and try to paint at night!  I have been going full speed at the greenhouse by day, and trying to get my painting in at night, and progress is being made, sloooo-wly.
An interesting result is that I am not spending as many minutes painting, but more time is spent thinking about the painting.  I am quite sure I have memorized areas of individual brush strokes!
Also, I seem to have returned to the same place as late last summer where I became concerned that paintings were becoming 'messy' when looked at too closely.  I am not sure 'loose' and 'messy' can ever be synonomous, but I've decided to let it happen for a while and see where it takes me.
Here is the latest photo of the street scene, which I've been thinking of as "Let's"  (you know, like 'let's' do lunch)  You're right, it's late!

Good night!  Cooper

acrylic painting, and life drawing

Greetings!

Our life drawing group has actually been able to meet twice in two weeks--a record for this winter!  I have been continuing to paint in my own studio, mostly from photos, which is just not the same as a real model.  It does succeed in keeping the paint brush moving though, so not all bad.

This painting is from a 50 minute pose.  We had preceeded this pose with numerous one and two minute poses, designed to 'loosen up our brushes', and that does help, but I am the clock-keeper for the group, and it's hard to get focused on painting, while also watching the clock.  I was painting on a 30 x 24 inch canvas, and when I started the composition, it was to be right-of-center, and I fully intended to have some of the model's face visable.  Change is good, eh?  I feel successful in capturing the model's posture and her sense of patience with our sometimes slow work!

This painting is from our March 11th session.  We again started the session with several one and two minute poses, and we also worked in a few ten minute poses.  I have not photo-d any of those yet, but will try to get that done, and post those as well.  This painting was a thirty minute pose, and painted on a 21 x 17 inch sheet of gessoed paper.  Normally our group works with lights at the same level as the model.  This session we were working in a different studio, with overhead spotlights available, and so we had those on as well as spots to the side of the model.  It gave us cool little lighting all over the place, but really screwed things up if you happened to be in a mood for dramatic lights and darks!  I feel successful with this painting in being able to find the large shapes, and being able to ignore the picky details.

At the risk of making this an incredibly long post, I will also update you on the large street scene canvas that has been on the easel in my home studio for the past couple weeks.

The first is the detail shot, and I am pleased with the attitude the couple is beginning to show :)  Summer nonchalence, I think!  but definitely some more time needed on this one.  Thanks for stopping by.

acrylic painting, Another Chapter Of Delta Force Reader

Good morning,

Last night, after painting walls (no, the room remodel is not yet finished), I was trying to make sense of the piles of everything in the studio.  This painting had been posted on my blog in January after a Thursday night studio group session.  At that point in time I labeled it finished, but rearranging the studio is always a sure way to get one previously thought done, back up on the easel. But just a few whops of the paint brush, and I like this a whole lot more.  It has a real name now, Another Chapter Of Delta Force Reader.  I've put it on my portfolio page now, so I suppose I should go sign it and put a layer of varnish on it!
